Deal With Overthinking

Overthinking, it’s a serious issue, at least for me. People seem to think it’s not that much of a big deal. But not being able to let go of a thought can be pretty difficult and can lead to disfunctioning. Today I’ve got a few tips and tricks for you to keep in mind while dealing with overthinking, most of them are from a psycologist. These tips really helped me out and I hope by writing this post I’ll be able to give something back.

Realize

Not every thought is there for a reason. I used to think everything that popped up in my head was there because apparently it was necessary for “some kind of reason.” No. The brain sometimes just brings up random thoughts to keep itself busy. There is no need to give any attention to these random thoughts that pop up while grocery shopping or whatever. You don’t have them for a reason, it may sound strange but it is true. What also may help is reading about the brain / human mind, if you understand it better you are more likely to see what’s useful and what’s not.

Other Perspectives 

Imagine yourself looking at the situation from the outside. Like looking at a picture. This way it’s easier to see how much of a big deal it actually is. It may help you dealing with your thoughts better since you can now put it in perspective.

Ask yourself

Does thinking this help me and is it useful to think this? If the aswer (and it most likely will)  is: NO. It is not worth your time and you’ll have to convince yourself to let it go and find an activity to distract yourself.

Your attention

It might be useful for some people to physically let yourself know you are “doing it again.” For example, put a rubber band or hair tie around your wrist, pull it back and let it slip everytime you are thinking about the subject that you didn’t want to think about anymore. It’s a harmless way to help yourself stop and be reminded of not thinking about it anymore. Don’t forget: keep it “harmless.” Never get too physical and hurt yourself intentionally.

Knowledge

As I mentioned before, it may also help to read more about the brain and the way it works. Knowledge is power, cliché but true. If you read or watch movies about the brain and the human mind it may help you understand things better. This way you will be able to get more of an insight in yourself as well. A friend and I both have a few books we can highly reccommend reading.

I’ll share them here: The Psychology Book (written in a way non-students or experts can understand it.) Breaking The Habit Of Being Yourself and from the same author You Are The Placebo. And we cannot forget about the books of Paul Arden, funny, eye-opening and creative, Whatever You Think, Think The Opposite.

Write

My last tip will be all about writing your thoughts down. And I mean litteraly writing down every single word of what’s in your head. Every single word. Now look at it and read it out loud a few times. Most of the time I end up laughing because I finally see how stupid it actually is. I always find this a great way to confront yourself and really look at the thought black and white. With thoughts you have to be black and white sometimes, if you are not strickt you’ll end up overthinking…

    Fijne tips! Ik ben wel echt iemand die teveel na kan denken en af en toe heb je dan echt behoefte een rust in je hoofd, omdat het zo vermoeiend is. Bij mij helpt het ook wel heel goed om afleiding te zoeken in de vorm van iets waar je 100% bij moet zijn met je hoofd.

    Dit is een tip wat iedereen kan gebruiken. Af en toe zitten we weleens in de puree. Dan halen we van alles in ons hoofd en denken we te veel. Jezelf afvragen en overwegen is het je tijd waard, helpt mij zeker om los te laten.

    I’m also an overthinker which leads to me stressing out XD Thanks for your tips on how to alleviate that stress! I think writing it out definitely helps. And reminding myself not to worry to much also helps :) Ps these photos came out lovely! I love the one where you’re holding your instax :)
